In Joint Custody, Which Policy Should My Child Be Covered Under?

I have a 16 year old driver who lives 50percent with me and 50percent with her mother, joint physical and legal custody. She will be driving cars in both homes. Should she be insured in both homes?

You should bring this up with the insurance company. Typically, rates would apply where she spent the most time with the car. If she keeps the car with you half the time and with her other parent half the time, it?s a toss up.

Realistically, joint custody doesn?t result in the child spending exactly half her time with one parent, though. Most of the time, one parent has her during the week and the other on the weekend. Figure out where she is spending the most actual time and you will have the answer. She should be listed as a resident of the home in which she spends the most time.
