Congestion in Earth's mantle: Mineralogists explain why plate tectonics stagnates in some places

Mar. 31, 2013 ? Earth is dynamic. What we perceive as solid ground beneath our feet, is in reality constantly changing. In the space of a year Africa and America are drifting apart at the back of the Middle Atlantic for some centimeters while the floor of the Pacific Ocean is subducted underneath the South American Continent. "In 100 million years' time Africa will be pulled apart and North Australia will be at the equator," says Prof. Dr. Falko Langenhorst from the Friedrich Schiller University Jena (Germany). Plate tectonics is leading to a permanent renewal of the ocean floors, the mineralogist explains. The gaps between the drifting slabs are being filled up by rising melt, solidifying to new oceanic crust. In other regions the slabs dive into the deep interior of Earth and mix with the surrounding Earth's mantle.

Earth is the only planet in our solar system, conducting such a 'facelift' on a regular basis. But the continuous up and down on Earth's crust doesn't run smoothly everywhere. "Seismic measurements show that in some mantle regions, where one slab is subducted underneath another one, the movement stagnates, as soon as the rocks have reached a certain depth," says Prof. Langenhorst. The causes of the 'congestion' of the subducted plate are still unknown. In the current issue of Nature Geoscience, Prof. Langenhorst and earth scientists of Bayreuth University now explain the phenomenon for the first time.

According to this, the rocks of the submerging ocean plate pond at a depth of 440 to 650 kilometers -- in the transition zone between the upper and the lower Earth mantle. "The reason for that can be found in the slow diffusion and transformation of mineral components," mineralogist Langenhorst explains. On the basis of high pressure experiments the scientists were able to clarify things: under the given pressure and temperature in this depth, the exchange of elements between the main minerals of the subducted ocean plate -- pyroxene and garnet -- is slowed down to an extreme extent. "The diffusion of a pyroxene-component in garnet is so slow, that the submerging rocks don't become denser and heavier, and therefore stagnate," the Jena scientist says.

Interestingly there is congestion in Earth's mantle exactly where the ocean floor submerges particularly fast into the interior of Earth. "In the Tonga rift off Japan for example, the speed of subduction is very high," Prof. Langenhorst states. Thereby the submerging rocks of the oceanic plate stay relatively cold up to great depth, which makes the exchange of elements between the mineral components exceptionally difficult. "It takes about 100 Million years for pyroxene crystals which are only 1 mm in size to diffuse into the garnet. For this amount of time the submerging plate stagnates," Langenhorst describes the rock congestion. It can probably only diffuse at the boundary of the lower Earth mantle. Because then pyroxene changes into the mineral akimotoite due to the higher pressure in the depth of 650 kilometers. "This could lead to an immediate rise in the rock density and would enable the submerging into greater depths."

NATO strike kills at least one child in Afghanistan

By Mustafa Andalib

GHAZNI, Afghanistan (Reuters) - A NATO helicopter killed at least one child and nine suspected Taliban fighters in Afghanistan's east on Saturday, officials and local residents said.

Last month Afghan President Hamid Karzai forbade Afghan forces from calling for NATO air support and forbade international forces from using air strikes "in Afghan homes or villages" after Afghan forces called in a strike that killed 10 civilians.

NATO initially said that Saturday's strike was in support of Afghan troops - which would be in contravention of the president's orders - but later said new information showed the helicopter had struck the insurgents separately.

"This was an independently acquired and engaged target," said ISAF spokesman Major Adam Wojack.

There were conflicting reports on the death toll from the air strike. A Reuters reporter saw the bodies of two children. One was in school uniform. Local elder Jan Mohammad and other residents said he was killed in the air strike.

The reporter also saw the hand and foot of a toddler at the site of the air strike, but the circumstances of the death were not immediately clear.

Senior police detective Colonel Mohammad Hussain said nine Taliban and one school-age child were killed in the air strike. He also said a woman was killed and eight civilians were wounded in a firefight between Afghan security forces and insurgents.

The deaths, on the outskirts of the capital of Ghazni province, will reopen an often heated debate between those who blame NATO air strikes for civilian deaths and others who argue NATO air support is vital to protect Afghan security forces.

A statement from the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said: "We are aware of reports of civilian casualties resulting from an engagement in Ghazni district, Ghazni province, this morning in which an Afghan security force was attacked by insurgents and returned fire.

"We can also confirm that later in the morning, in the same area, an attack helicopter engaged a group of insurgents with direct fire, killing or wounding several."

"We take all allegations of civilian casualties seriously. Afghan and ISAF officials are assessing the incident," the ISAF statement said.

Civilian casualties - particularly those caused by air strikes - are a significant source of friction between Karzai and his international allies as the United States and Afghanistan negotiate over the size of a future American military presence following the departure of most international troops by the end of 2014.

Some Afghan officials say privately that limiting air strikes exposes the 352,000-strong Afghan security forces to greater danger as they take over the responsibilities of international forces.

Foreign air power is especially critical to cover the mountainous regions near the Pakistani border.

Obama to pitch more jobs in public works in Miami

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama will promote a plan to create jobs by attracting private investment in highways and other public works during a visit Friday to a Miami port, the White House said.

The president will flesh out details of his proposals in a speech at the port, which is undergoing $2 billion in upgrades paid for with government and private money. Obama, in the quick trip to South Florida, will try to show that the economy remains his top priority in the midst of high-profile campaigns on immigration reform and gun control.

Among the proposals Obama will call for:

?Higher caps on "private activity bonds" to encourage more private spending on highways and other infrastructure projects. State and local governments use the bonds to attract investment.

?Giving foreign pension funds tax-exempt status when selling U.S. infrastructure, property or real estate assets. U.S. pension funds are generally tax exempt in those circumstances. The administration says some international pension funds cite the tax burden as a reason for not investing in American infrastructure.

?$4 billion in new spending on two infrastructure programs that award loans and grants.

?A renewed call for a $10 billion national "infrastructure bank" ? a proposal from his first term that gained little traction.

The president made private-sector infrastructure investment a key part of the economic agenda he rolled out in his State of the Union address last month. He also called in his address for a "Fix-It-First" program that would spend $40 billion in taxpayer funds on urgent repairs.

Obama's focus on generating more private sector investment underscores the tough road new spending faces on Capitol Hill, where Republican lawmakers often threaten to block additional spending unless it is paid for by tax cuts or other measures.

Any increased spending associated with the proposals Obama was outlining Friday would not add to the deficit, a senior administration official said. The official was not authorized to discuss the plan in advance of Obama's announcement and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The official did not detail how the costs would be paid for, saying only that more information would be included in the president's budget.

Obama will release his budget April 10.

Child Abuse Victim Tracks Down 'Bogeyman' Years Later For ...

A man, who was brutally raped as a seven-year-old boy, meticulously planned his murderous revenge decades later, but what he couldn?t predict was that the ?bogeyman? that haunted him for 25-years has turned into a ?frightened, damaged? old man.

David Holthouse?is now revealing his plans to become a killer along with the trauma of his boyhood sexual assault in the stage adaptation of?Stalking The Bogeyman, which opens off Broadway in February 2014, ABCNews.com is reporting.

PHOTOS: NFL Sex Scandals

?This wasn?t just a revenge fantasy, though it?s tempting to lie about it now,? revealed 41-year-old Holthouse, a documentary filmmaker and investigative reporter in Alaska who packed a?Beretta 9 mm with a silencer and the serial number scratched off when he went to his nemesis??Colorado home. ?If I had gone through with it, I most certainly would have been caught.?

Holthouse?s horror story began in 1978 at the hands of a family friend?s 17-year-old son ? while the adults were??drinking wine and playing board games? the high school football jock whisked the young boy away promising a karate lesson.

?I didn?t know what was going on, but I knew it was bad, so I started crying, and he told me to shut up and then started chasing me around the room, waving the sword,? wrote David as he recounted the attack. ?He put the blade to my throat and backed me into a corner, where I dropped into a crouch and cowered. Then, he told me to take off my pants.

?I was seven, and it was violent, sick, pedophiliac rape. ? I no longer believed in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny or the Tooth Fairy, but from that night on, I had no such doubts about the Bogeyman.?

The shamed child never spoke a word about his ordeal ? not even to his parents ? despite attempts by the teenager abuser to repeat the attack.??I didn?t want their memories of my childhood tarnished with this scum,? he explained.

?I didn?t really have a firm concept of what had happened,? Holthouse later told ABCNews.com. ?Nobody ever talked to me about sex or rape. I don?t think it was a function of the era,? he said, explaining that most kids his age didn?t even have a word for it. ?It was easier to keep quiet.?

PHOTOS: 10 Stars Involved In Nude Photo Scandals

As a troubled teenager, David became obsessed with the subject and researched rape out of fear of becoming part of the??vicious cycle? of?sexual abuse and growing up to become a pedophile himself.

?I felt like a werewolf had bitten me and it was only a matter of time before the full moon rose,? said the victim, who had planned to kill himself and make it look like a mountaineering accident if he ever suffered dark intentions himself.

In a bizarre twist of fate, David moved to Colorado and was told by his unsuspecting mother that the rapist was now living in Denver with his wife and children, which sparked his deadly payback plot of stalking his suburban home and learning the man?s daily routine.

Holthouse intended to shoot his assailant below the waist, watch him ?writhe like a poisoned cockroach,? then kick him in the stomach and shoot him three times in the head ? believing that because he had never breathed a word about the rape, he would not be a suspect.

Ironically it would be David?s own childhood diaries that would bring the truth to light though, when in 2003 ? 10 days after he bought the gun ? his mother found his notebook detailing the assault and called him in tears. She then?sent an anonymous letter to the man?s parents, telling them their son was a molester and to keep him away from children, and cut off all future ties with the family.

PHOTOS:Top Celebrity Sex Scandals

The revelation caused the would-be revenge killer to call off his attack, and instead, a year later he sent two letters to his assailant asking:??Remember me?

?Simply ignoring this letter is not going to work,? he warned. ?If I don?t hear from you by Friday late afternoon, I?ll start calling your house, and then knocking on your front door.

?I want to be perfectly clear here: I am not threatening you with any physical harm, and I am not hinting at blackmail. I don?t want your blood or your money, just one uncomfortable conversation.?

Holthouse had already begun putting his story down on paper for publication in the?Denver Westword in May 2004, and two days before it was due to run, the man called and agreed to the confrontation.

?I?ve thought 100 times about contacting you in the last 20 years to tell you that, and I just never had the courage to pick up the phone,? the rapist said, according to his victim. ?I?m sorry for the pain I?ve caused you and my parents and your parents.?

He went on to claim that David?s rape was the one and only assault he had perpetrated, and that since then he had told his wife and parents the dark truth.

?I doubt that is true,? said a skeptical Holthouse.??He tried to repeat the crime against me for the next two years of my childhood. He would have assaulted me again, given the opportunity ? I believe that.

?I think as a society, we turn rapists into monsters and he had turned into a monster in my mind. Doing that is a risk because most rapists lead normal lives.?

Now the bogeyman has lost his evil power, the former abused child is married with his own two-year-old son and preparing to become a published playwright.

?I was expecting this sort of lightning-bolt catharsis,? he said. ?I thought I?d suddenly feel a lot better. That didn?t happen. Since then, I?ve realized that, at least for me, there?s no such thing as getting over it. All I can do is get better with it.?

'Big Bang' cast performs 'Rocky Horror' number

By Ashley Majeski, TODAY contributor

Although Jim Parsons is used to sporting T-shirts featuring robots and scientific equations for his role as nerdy Dr. Sheldon Cooper on "The Big Bang Theory," the actor was willing to strip down to a corset and fishnets ? in the name of sweet charity.

Jordan Strauss / AP

The stars of "Big Bang Theory, from left, Simon Helberg, Jim Parsons, Melissa Rauch, Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco perform onstage at the 21st Annual "A Night at Sardi's" to benefit the Alzheimer's Association at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Wednesday, March 20, 2013.

Parsons and the rest of the cast of the hit CBS comedy dressed up as characters from the cult classic "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" Wednesday to perform the play?s signature musical number, ?The Time Warp,? during the 21st annual ?A Night at Sardi?s? awards dinner and celebrity musical review. Stars and entertainment industry leaders gather each year and perform musical numbers from Broadway shows to raise money for the Alzheimer?s Association.

?This is the fifth year we, as the ?Big Bang? cast, have come here to do a number to keep bringing attention to this cause,? Parsons told "Entertainment Tonight" that evening. He played ?sweet transvestite? Dr. Frank-N-Furter during the performance. ?There is no cure yet and it?s just very important to keep attention on it until there is one.

?None of us sing very well, and it?s never necessarily good what we do, but, like a train wreck, you can?t take your eyes off of it so there?s the attention.?

Joining Parsons on stage were Kaley Cuoco as Magenta the maid, Simon Helberg as servant Riff Raff, Johnny Galecki as Brad Majors, Melissa Rauch as tap-dancing Columbia, and Kunal Nayyar as biker Eddie.

?It?s a great cause. It?s very important to us and it?s become more important over the years and it?s an honor that they keep asking us back,? Cuoco told "ET" before the group?s performance, adding that, ?It?s going to be scary. It?s going to be a horror. Terrifyingly bad. But we?ll have fun!?

Last year, the "Big Bang" cast performed ?Let the Sunshine In? from the musical "Hair!" at the event.

According to the Alzheimer's Association, the ?Night at Sardi?s? events have raised more than $21 million to date.?

Student's anti-rape video strikes a chord on the Web

An anti-rape video posted on the Web with the line, "Real men treat women with respect," has gone viral: So far, it's been viewed over 1.4 million times.

Filmed by University of Oregon sophomore Samantha Stendal, the 26-second video, "A Needed Response," was made in reaction to the Steubenville rape trial in Ohio, which convicted two high-school football players of raping a drunk and passed out 16-year-old girl.

The victim was unconscious during the crime, and in addition to the rape itself, had to endure a response on social media that often made light of the situation.

The online comments, some of which blamed the young woman, outraged Stendal. She told Yahoo! News in an email, "I become frustrated with the constant victim blaming and general rape culture that I saw online. I decided to make a video in order to place something more positive on the internet. I wanted to promote the idea of treating one another like decent human beings."

The short video shows a woman passed out on a couch. A man looks directly into the camera, and whispers, ?Hey bros, check who passed out on the couch. Guess what I'm gonna do to her?"

He then covers the unresponsive woman with a blanket, puts a pillow under her head, tucks a lock of hair behind her ear and places a mug beside her. Then he delivers the line, ?Real men treat women with respect.?

Comments to the video on YouTube have spurred discussion. They include one from BJ Lincoln, who writes, ?This is a very cool message. Part of our culture permits rape in many ways and it needs to change. Thank you both for making the message clear.?

User blondegirl214 agreed, ?Glad to see at least one man gets it. All is not lost after all!?

The video has obviously struck a chord with viewers. Stendal told Yahoo! News she is "surprised" by the huge response, and added, "I am happy to see the conversation moving away from victim blaming and changing to how people in vulnerable situations should be treated."

The iPad was never designed to be a laptop, but some people can't resist the urge to change a gadget's nature. For that purpose, Logitech is outing keyboard folios for the iPad and iPad Mini that double as a hands-free viewing stand for those long-haul flights. Your fingers will be hovering over a Bluetooth keyboard with membrane scissor keys, covered in your choice of colored fabric shell. The hardware is marked down to be available in the US and Europe in April, setting you back $100 for the iPad edition and $89.99 for the 7.87-inch version -- and if you'd like to learn more, you can check out the videos we've stashed after the break.

(AP Photo/Seth Wenig)

(AP) ? Five days into spring, warm weather and budding flowers were just a rumor Monday as the East Coast endured another blast of winter.

A wide-ranging storm that buried parts of the Midwest weakened as it moved east but still managed to carpet lawns and fields in a fresh layer of white. Many schools opened late or closed early, and hundreds of flights were canceled.

The cold temperatures and miserable mixture of snow and rain had people longing for more agreeable weather.

"I'm ready for flip flops," said Jessica Cunitz, 24 of Westchester County, N.Y., who stopped at a gas station along Interstate 78 in Pennsylvania to fill her overheating car with antifreeze. "It's supposed to be spring."

In Maryland, Michael Pugh donned a wool coat, knit cap, waterproof pants and heavy boots to trudge more than a mile through four inches of wet snow to his bank in downtown Hagerstown, about 70 miles west of Baltimore. He pronounced the weather "dreadful."

By this time of year, "I was hoping it'd be sunny and the weather breaking," said Pugh, a warehouse worker who turned 38 Monday. "Every day I think I can pack up the winter coat, and break out the spring clothes, and I can't."

Earlier, the storm walloped the Midwest, dumping a record 17 inches in Springfield, Ill., and a foot or more elsewhere in the state. Travel remained treacherous Monday afternoon, with Interstate 55 and 57 still covered in snow and ice, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation. Numerous vehicles were reported to be off roads, according to Illinois state police.

In downtown Springfield, coffee-shop manager Mike Zengilani said food-delivery trucks were hours late. But he didn't think about closing.

"Everyone else closes, so it's good for us to be open," Zengilani said. "It's Monday, it's definitely slower, but we all made the effort to come in."

The system was little more than a nuisance by the time it reached the East Coast. Air travel saw the biggest impact, with nearly 600 flights canceled as of Monday afternoon, according to the FlightAware tracking service. Hardest-hit airports included those in New York, Philadelphia and Washington.

Roadways, meanwhile, were mostly wet.

In Hamburg, Pa. ? which has seen three here-and-gone snowfalls in little more than a week ? carpet installer Seth Hanna drank coffee and surveyed the slush from a covered front porch.

"We got these warm days a few weeks ago, and everybody got their hopes up. March is supposed to be out like a lamb but it's not doing it," said Hanna, 30. "I love the snow, but I'm ready for some warm spring weather."

Robert Fink, 25, of Magnolia, N.J. said the worst part about yet another snow storm was having to shovel. Fink ? shovel in hand outside a truck stop in Bordentown ? said he longed for Florida, where he used to live.

"I'm a wimp when it comes to the cold," he said.

At the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, people waiting in line for tickets to this week's arguments on gay marriage held umbrellas or put tarps over their belongings as the snow fell. Darienn Powers wore a trash bag from the waist down to keep dry, but said the snow still made everything "a little wet and uncomfortable."

The spring snow was not expected to affect Washington's famous cherry blossoms. National Park Service spokeswoman Carol Johnson said the flowering trees are still expected to reach peak bloom between April 3 and April 6.

Mitchell Gaines, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, N.J., said colder-than-normal temperatures the past few weeks had created conditions ripe for snow.

"It's fairly late in March to see a system like this," he said.

Supplement helped control blood-sugar levels in obese youths

COLUMBIA, Mo. Childhood and adolescent obesity rates in the United States have increased dramatically in the past three decades. Being obese puts individuals at greater risk for developing Type 2 diabetes, a disease in which individuals have too much sugar in their blood. Now, University of Missouri researchers found vitamin D supplements can help obese children and teens control their blood-sugar levels, which may help them stave off the disease.

"By increasing vitamin D intake alone, we got a response that was nearly as powerful as what we have seen using a prescription drug," said Catherine Peterson, an associate professor of nutrition and exercise physiology at MU. "We saw a decrease in insulin levels, which means better glucose control, despite no changes in body weight, dietary intake or physical activity."

Peterson and her colleagues studied 35 pre-diabetic obese children and adolescents who were undergoing treatment in the MU Adolescent Diabetic Obesity Program. All of those in the study had insufficient or deficient vitamin D levels and had similar diets and activity levels. Study participants randomly were assigned either a high-dose vitamin D supplement or a placebo that they took daily for six months. Those who took the supplement became vitamin D sufficient and lowered the amount of insulin in their blood.

"The vitamin D dosage we gave to the obese adolescents in our study is not something I would recommend for everyone," Peterson said. "For clinicians, the main message from this research is to check the vitamin D status of their obese patients, because they're likely to have insufficient amounts. Adding vitamin D supplements to their diets may be an effective addition to treating obesity and its associated insulin resistance."

Vitamin D helps maintain healthy bones, muscles and nerves and enters bodies through sunlight exposure, diet or supplements. Vitamin D insufficiency is common; however, it can be more detrimental to those who are obese, Peterson said.

"What makes vitamin D insufficiency different in obese individuals is that they process vitamin D about half as efficiently as normal-weight people," Peterson said. "The vitamin gets stored in their fat tissues, which keeps it from being processed. This means obese individuals need to take in about twice as much vitamin D as their lean peers to maintain sufficient levels of vitamin D."

Adding vitamin D supplements is a natural, inexpensive way to help obese children and teens decrease their odds of developing diabetes and avoid the side effects that might come from taking prescriptions to control their blood sugar, Peterson said.

Peterson is the director of undergraduate studies for the Department of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology. The College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, the College of Human Environmental Sciences and the School of Medicine jointly administer the department.

###

The study, "Correcting vitamin D insufficiency improves insulin sensitivity in obese adolescents: a randomized controlled trial," was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Study co-authors included MU researchers: Anthony Belenchia, Aneesh Tosh and Laura Hillman. The J.R. Albert Foundation, an organization that supports nonprofit education and research programs to enable individuals to live healthier lives, funded the research.

NEW YORK (AP) ? It's not the kind of performance that will win her another Academy Award, but Tilda Swinton certainly has them buzzing at the Museum of Modern Art.

But keep it down, please. She's trying to sleep.

The "Moonrise Kingdom star has been engaging in a different kind of performance art. She's presenting a one-person piece called "The Maybe," in which she lies sleeping in a glass box for the day. The first performance was over the weekend, and the museum won't say if there's a schedule for when exactly it will come back for six other performances.

On Monday, the display drew a line of spectators that wound through a whole second-floor gallery into a museum hallway.

Erwin Aschenbrenner, a bemused German tourist, said it "just what you'd expect to see at MoMA."

The actress "is so pale and not moving in there that she looks like she's dead," said Robbie von Kampen, 20, a philosophy major at Bard College, north of New York City.

But after about seven hours a day of the shuteye pose on a white mattress in the glass box ? with only a carafe of water and a glass to get her through ? Swinton can stretch and walk off into the Manhattan night. But only when spectators leave.

So what's the point?

"This makes me think about myself, looking at her," said Quinn Moreland, 20, also a Bard student, majoring in art history.

"You don't usually get to stare at somebody like this; it makes me self-conscious," she explained.

Added von Kampen, "Yeah, it's socially unacceptable ? it's kinda creepy."

No one, not even museum curators, could say whether the thin, mostly immobile Swinton is actually getting some sleep while people stare at her.

At least Swinton was comfortable. She wore a pair of grubby sneakers, dark sporty slacks and a checkered shirt. Her glasses lay on the mattress.

But no snacks were in sight. And none could be offered in the closed chamber.

Swinton also starred in a glass box in 1995 at London's Serpentine Gallery ? seven days, eight hours a day ? in an exhibition seen by 22,000 people.

The next year, she repeated the spectacle at the Museo Barracco in Rome.

Zimbabwe rights lawyer bail appeal postponed

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) ? A Zimbabwean court on Friday postponed a bail appeal to release the nation's top rights lawyer, Beatrice Mtetwa.

Mtetwa was arrested March 17 on allegations of obstructing justice and will spend eight nights in jail before she reappears in court on Monday.

Her jailing and the detention of members of Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai's office she was defending have been described by rivals of longtime President Robert Mugabe as a campaign of intimidation ahead of elections scheduled around July.

High court judge Joseph Musakwa ruled Friday that state prosecutors needed more time to prepare for the bail hearing.

But defense attorney Harrison Nkomo said Mtetwa's appeal papers were filed early Thursday, giving prosecutors ample time to study them

"This is the state's way of punishing her by letting her spend more time in jail. We are concerned by the way the state is dragging its feet," he said.

Lawyers were planning to demonstrate outside the court Friday where Mtetwa was refused bail on Wednesday and ordered to be held in custody to April 3.

Police say Mtetwa shouted at them and caused a distraction during which three laptops with information police were looking for disappeared and were presumed to have been hidden.

Mtetwa denies any wrongdoing and says she only asked police officers to show her a valid search warrant during a raid on offices of Tsvangirai's staff on Sunday.

Obstructing justice carries a maximum penalty of two years imprisonment.

She was brought to court Tuesday after police ignored a judge's order to release her Monday.

Prosecutors oppose bail on grounds she could hinder police investigations into allegations that officials from Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change illegally collected information on high level corruption and impersonated police in doing so.

Mtetwa's prolonged detention in jail has prompted outcry from the African and international legal groups.

Mtetwa is the recipient of an array of awards from international jurists' groups including the American Bar Association over a distinguished career of three decades.

She has also defended journalists and human rights activists against prosecution by police and Mugabe loyalists in Zimbabwe's judiciary.

"There is absolutely no legal basis for her arrest and continued detention," Mtetwa's defense attorney Nkomo told The Associated Press.

Egypt officials: 2 tourists missing in Sinai

EL-ARISH, Egypt (AP) ? An Egyptian intelligence official says security forces are investigating a suspected kidnapping of an Israeli-Arab tourist and a Norwegian female in the Sinai Peninsula.

The official says a Bedouin taxi driver claims he was driving the two to the popular Red Sea diving site of Dahab on Friday when gunmen ambushed his vehicle and c captured the two tourists.

Security officials are treating the incident as a disappearance, but say they are investigating the driver's account that the two were kidnapped.

A top security official in Nuweiba southern Sinai says he is heading to the Israeli-Egyptian border crossing to find out more about the identities of the tourists.

All officials spoke anonymously due to the sensitivity of the subject.
