Australian researchers have uncovered a potential new way to regulate the body's natural immune response, offering hope of a simple and effective new treatment for auto-immune diseases.

Auto-immune diseases result from an overactive immune response that causes the body to attack itself.

The new approach involves increasing good regulating cells in the body, unlike most current research which focuses on stopping "bad" or "effector" cells, says lead researcher Dr Suzanne Hodgkinson, from UNSW's Faculty of Medicine and Liverpool Hospital.

The researchers induced the body's T-cell front-line defences by injecting cell-signalling proteins called cytokines, in particular cytokine Interleukin-5 (II-5 cytokine).

When T-regulatory cells are grown in a way to make them specific to a particular protein they develop receptors for the Il-5 cytokine. The Il-5 cytokine boost allows the body's immune system to better regulate its response to disease without going into overdrive.

The team cloned II-5 cytokine and injected it into rats with the neurological condition Guillain?Barr? syndrome. These rats recovered much quicker and, if treated as a precaution, did not fall ill. The method has also shown promise in animals with multiple sclerosis, with kidney disease nephritis and trying to overcome organ transplantation rejection.

"One of the nice things about this discovery is that it is one of the few treatments in the auto-immune world and in the transplantation world that works not by attacking the effector cells, but by increasing the good regulating cells. So it works in a very different way from almost every other treatment we've got available," Dr Hodgkinson says.

Il-5 injections could be more palatable than inoculation by parasitic worms ? another approach in regulating auto-immune conditions, the researchers say.

International research shows swallowing helminths parasites can regulate the immune system and boost T-cell production to combat illnesses such as celiac disease and multiple sclerosis. The absence of the worms in guts in the developed world has been cited as a possible cause for the sharp rise in auto-immune diseases in Western nations.

"The process we've developed may be the same process that the helminths kick off. When you get a helminths infestation, one of the changes in your immune response is an increase in cells called eosinophils and these cells make the cytokine Interleukin-5," Dr Hodgkinson says.

"In this new treatment, it's a matter of injecting the interleukin-5 and the body does the rest. It's both safe and effective and we think inducing the immune response by injection may be more attractive to people than swallowing parasitic worms."

The next step is to take the treatment to human trials, which could be underway within two to five years, says Dr Hodgkinson, whose paper outlining the study has been published in the journal Blood.

The Best Kiss award at the MTV Movie Awards is arguably the fans' favorite category to vote on.

For the past three years in a row, the honor has been bestowed upon "Twilight" co-stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart for their smooches as Edward Cullen and Bella Swan. This year, they're up against some hefty competition: Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in "Crazy, Stupid, Love," Emma Watson and Rupert Grint in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2," Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum in "The Vow" and, their biggest opponents, Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson in "The Hunger Games." While the winner is anybody's guess, we're wondering which couple deserves the award.

There's no one better to answer our question than Robin Thicke, who's managed to croon his way into the hearts of many ladies. The musician tells MTV News that the Best Kiss award should go to the most "powerful" smooch.

"You have to build up the tension, because the kiss is the release," the "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" singer said. "The kiss is the moment when the strings come in, and all of the danger and the anger and the frustration and the loss — the kiss becomes redemption. It takes you out of purgatory and into the gates of heaven. A kiss has to be that powerful, in my opinion."

If fans honor Thicke's definition when they vote, it sounds like Hutcheron and Lawrence could take home the coveted golden popcorn. Their characters, Katniss and Peeta, are in danger while they're stuck in a cave, she could lose him if he dies from his injuries, and he's frustrated and angry that she wants to head into the bloodbath of the Cornucopia to save him. With a single kiss, all that tension is released. Sounds like they're a shoe-in, right?

New Mexico (5) ? Gave narrow victories to Democrat Al Gore in 2000 and Republican George W. Bush in 2004, and an influx of Hispanic and younger voters now moves this state toward Obama's column. No advertising yet from Obama, Romney or any super political action committees.

Pennsylvania (20) ? Pennsylvania has tipped Democrat in the final month in recent presidential races. Romney has continued campaigning in the state, but a nearly 1 million Democratic edge in voter registration makes the state a reach for the GOP.

Wisconsin (10) ? Embattled Gov. Scott Walker's improving chances of winning a June 5 recall election helps Romney better compete in Wisconsin, where Ronald Reagan was the last Republican presidential candidate to win. Romney aides say Wisconsin leaps ahead of Michigan in priorities if Walker prevails.

Colorado (9) ? Long a reliable GOP state, but Colorado's conservative profile is changing. Young professionals and Hispanic voters were central to Obama's victory in 2008, but the sluggish economy has hurt his standing. Female voters in Denver's suburbs could play a big role.

Florida (29) ? Florida is the prime target for both campaigns. Obama won in 2008, but the housing crisis, high unemployment and gas prices are dogging him. Romney won the primary in January and has picked up the endorsement of GOP Sen. Marco Rubio. Obama's organization has a large advantage.

Iowa (6) ? An important Bush-state pick-up for Obama in 2008. Iowa has been a national popular-vote bellwether for 20 years. Obama's attention in the state where his caucus victory launched him in 2008 is countered by Romney's two caucus campaigns. Conservatives are wary of Romney's Mormon faith and social issues profile, but he's got GOP Gov. Terry Branstad on his side.

Nevada (6) ? One of three Southwestern states Obama flipped in 2008. Nevada is also the prime example of the economy's struggles. Unemployment was 12.3 percent in February, a point Romney will press. There's a strong labor and Hispanic vote, a plus for Obama. A higher Mormon population helps Romney.

New Hampshire (4) ? Romney has a vacation home in New Hampshire, which is next to Massachusetts, where Romney was governor. He won the 2012 primary big, but Obama peeled off this Bush state in 2008 and has worked hard to keep it. Vice President Joe Biden visited Friday. But the GOP is back in power in the Legislature, and freshman Sen. Kelly Ayotte is seen as asset for Romney.

Ohio (18) ? This Midwestern state has been a general election bellwether since 1980. Romney won the 2012 primary and has support from establishment figures such as Sen. Rob Portman. Obama has the organizing advantage, although the economy remains a sticking point, especially in the industrial northwest.

Virginia (13) ? Long a GOP bastion, Obama carried Virginia in 2008 by turning out young and minority voters. An influx of under-35 crowd, especially from the Washington area, has continued. But Republicans roared back in 2010, ending consecutive Democratic administrations in governorship by electing up-and-comer Bob McDonnell.

LEANING REPUBLICAN (47):

Arizona (11) ? 2008 GOP nominee John McCain's single-digit victory in his home state, and Hispanic and young voter boom, give Obama hope that Arizona is trending as others in the Southwest. But Romney won big in February's primary, helped by the support of GOP Gov. Jan Brewer, in a state where Republicans and the tea party are in charge.

Indiana (11) ? Obama broke a 44-year GOP trend in 2008 by winning Indiana, albeit by a single percentage point. Unemployment is high and the tea party is a new factor, both working against Obama.

Missouri (10) ? Democrats have contested Missouri in the past three elections, only to lose each time. Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill is in a tough re-election fight, and Obama's approval has dipped below 40 percent.

North Carolina (15) ? Democratic Gov. Bev Perdue's decision not to seek a second term this year, union anger about the Democratic National Convention in this weak union state, plus Obama's support for gay marriage, rejected in a May 8 referendum, are warnings that a repeat for Obama will be tougher.

Criminal Minds' Joe Mantegna: Our Returning Troops Need Jobs

Criminal Minds star Joe Mantegna has a message for Americans this Memorial Day: Our veterans need jobs.

Mantegna, who will return as co-host of Monday's National Memorial Day Concert on PBS with fellow CBS star Gary Sinise, is also actively working with America Wants You!, a new initiative that encourages corporate America to hire men and women returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Mantegna and Criminal Minds co-star Thomas Gibson have also filmed PSAs to spread the word.

"When you meet people who've had a lot of military training, they're America's finest," Mantegna tells TVGuide.com. "They're just dedicated, respectful, hard-working. They have all those qualities that you would hope they would have. So, to me, it was a no-brainer."

Mantegna says hiring vets is an easy way to give back to those who have dedicated themselves to protecting our country. "They've fought and served so we can have a free country, so we can have the choices to do the things we want to do, whether its choice of religion or freedom of speech. Or even hiring a person to do a job," Mantegna says. "It's an ironic situation. They're fighting for freedoms that allow you to not hire them too if you want. But I think we can help them along."

America Wants You! estimates that there are 800,000 veterans out of work. Mantegna knows that the PSAs won't solve the problem by themselves, but he remains committed. "At least by increasing the awareness, [we're] letting people know to be sensitive to it," He says. "[Employers] should give them a consideration, knowing that their lives have been disrupted for, sometimes, years. I grew up through Vietnam, and I thought that took a long time. And the Vietnam Era was actually shorter than [Iraq]. So, it's been quite a hardship for many of them. I think they can use a little boost up."

Mantegna, who says he has lots of military connections in his family, says his support of the troops grew stronger once he became involved with PBS' National Memorial Day Concert 11 years ago. "I was so taken by the whole event," he says. "What I was actually most taken by was by the non-politicalness of it. I've been an independent my whole life, so I distrust organizations to tell you the truth. You get more than three people together and I get nervous. But I came away from that whole experience with the feeling that our military really needs our help [and] our support. When the stuff hits the fan, those are the guys that are called upon to do the dirty work."

Pieces of this issue may even make it onto Criminal Minds. Because of his character Rossi's military background on the show, Mantegna had pitched a story idea even before he became involved with America Wants You! "We already have the bones of the story line, and I am fairly assured it will be happening this coming season," he says. "It will encompass partly just what we're talking about. The character is a vet that falls on hard times."

Mantegna says he hopes the initiative grows and that he can continue to be a part of it. "If it does what it's supposed to do, if it's successful in any way, that'd be great," he says. "And if there's anything that can be done to improve it, I'm certainly game. But there are people who are working 365 days out of the year to make this stuff happen. They deserve the thanks. I mean, I'm just putting a face on it. I don't really need any thanks for that. I hit the jackpot in being able to do what I do."

And Mantegna says it's not just corporate America that owes veterans a debt. "When you see somebody in uniform, it's a great gesture to just kind of give them a smile and reach out your hand and say thanks for your service," Mantegna says. "I think it goes a long way."

"Star Wars" hit theaters for the very first time 35 years ago today, on May 25, 1977.

When that day dawned, not only did we have no idea who Luke and Leia were, but we hadn't heard of Admiral "It's a TRAP!" Ackbar, no one cared whether or not Greedo shot first, and thankfully, weesa no hearda of Jar Jar Binks.

Maybe you weren't among those first to discover the film and see it early. But if you went near a movie theater at all that May and June, you probably saw the lines winding around your local multiplex, and very soon you likely wanted to know what was going on in a galaxy far, far away.

If you were a kid, "Star Wars" merchandise soon filled your room, and your school. Action figures, pajamas, wastebaskets, bedsheets -- nothing existed that George Lucas couldn't put a Wookiee face on.

So here's to you, "Star Wars," and your whole crazy, celestial community. Today, we'll even forgive you for the prequels.
